Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for suspected drunken driving April 5 and Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
Kona officers arrested seven drivers while South Hilo officers arrested six and South Kohala officers five, according to data released Wednesday by the Hawaii Police Department. Puna arrested three motorists and North Kohala officers one.
So far this year, there have been 353 DUI arrests compared with 273 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 220 major accidents so far this year compared with 251 during the same period last year.
As of Wednedsay, eight fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, seven people had also died.
